With routine use of improved prenatal ultrasound, a number of congenital anomalies or “birth defects” can be diagnosed which formerly would have not been until birth. These include esophageal artesia, duodenal artesia, hydronephrosis, congenital cystic lesions of the lung, myelomeningocele, abdominal wall defects, diaphragmatic hernia and bladder extrophy. Some of these situations can be treated with fetal surgery prior to delivery with the hopes of improved outcome. Most require that the baby be delivered in or near centers that specialize in treatment of these disorders.

Preparation is key to successful treatment. If you baby has been found to have one of these conditions, ask your doctor to be referred to an appropriate specialist. You may meet with the specialist who will describe the treatment plan. Any questions you may have can be answered at this time. You may also choose to take a tour of the facility where your baby will be treated. To make an appointment, please call 865-546-2136 or email
