History:
East Tennessee Pediatric Surgery Group was founded by John R. Maddox, Jr., M.D. who came to the Children’s Hospital in 1964 as the only pediatric subspecialist. Alan E Anderson, M.D. joined the group in 1998 while remaining on staff at University of Tennessee Medical Center. Konstantinos “Gus” Papadakis joined the group in 2001 and Alfred Kennedy, M.D. most recently joined the group in 2004. All members of the group practice at both the Children’s Hospital and University of Tennessee Medical Center. The physicians are all Certified by the American Board of Surgery.

What is a Pediatric Surgeon? The following is adapted from the American College of Surgeons. Pediatric surgeons specialize in the treatment of illnesses that require surgery in children. These surgeons operate and care for children from the neonatal period to teenage years. Pediatric surgeons have trained specifically to work with children and understand their special needs.
